Eye tracking in laser eye surgery

Our eyes are never completely stationary, they make hundreds of tiny flickering movements every second, called saccades. Precise eye tracking in laser eye surgery ensures that each laser pulse is delivered accurately to the correct spot which results in a good vision correction result. But our eyes move in 6 axes or directions which must be tracked and compensated for.

A boat can roll in the sea from side to side from side on waves as it rotates around it’s longitudinal axis. As the boat goes over waves coming head on it rotates forwards and backwards which is called pitching around the transverse axis. And the boat can also rotate like the hands of a clock around a vertical axis which is called yaw. All these movements can cause inaccuracate treatment and affect the results of the treatment.

The Schwind Armaris laser has ushered in a new era of precision with its groundbreaking six-dimensional tracking system which includes roll, pitch, and yaw tracking. Many other vision correction lasers can only follow the eye in three dimensions, the X (movement of the eye left and right), Y (movement of the eye forward and backwards), and Z (movement of the eye up and down) dimensions during laser eye surgery.

However, the Armaris expands the range it can follow the eye and compensate for these movements with each laser pulse in another 3 dimensions which are pitch, yaw, and roll movements. We use the only Schwind Armaris laser in Birmingham and the West Midlands.

Beyond the realm of medicine, the concept of multidimensional laser tracking finds applications in various industries. In aerospace, for instance, lasers play a pivotal role in spacecraft orientation and navigation. By emitting highly focused beams of light, lasers can track the position and movement of spacecraft with incredible precision. Spaceships also must compensate for X, Y, Z movements and roll, pitch and yaw to accurately dock with the international space station. If any one of these dimensions aren’t accurately compensated for, the spaceship won’t dock and even worse, one of the ships could be damaged. This technology ensures that satellites and crewed missions maintain their desired trajectories, facilitating successful missions and scientific exploration.

Moreover, the fusion of lasers and tracking mechanisms has revolutionized the gaming and entertainment sector. In virtual reality (VR) systems, lasers track head and body movements, allowing users to immerse themselves in lifelike experiences. This synergy creates a sense of presence and interactivity, enhancing the overall realism and engagement of virtual environments.

The Schwind Armaris laser’s multidimensional tracking capabilities serve as a testament to the versatility and significance of laser tracking technology. As it continues to shape advancements across various industries, from medicine to aerospace and entertainment, the world stands witness to the far-reaching impact of precision laser tracking. This level of accuracy holds immense promise for delicate medical procedures, especially vision correction eye surgeries where precision is paramount.
