Vision Correction surgery

WHY have vision correction?

You’re probably tired of the hassle of waking up & not being able to see & needing optical aids for sports & all the other activities you enjoy.

But here are some other reasons you may not know about:

1. Safety: Lens & laser eye surgery is safe & the NHS says so. Contact lens wear is more likely to cause an infection & scarring.

2. Lens & laser eye surgery saves you money

3. Lens & laser eye surgery pollutes our oceans & landfill with 100 000 tons of plastic waste from discarded glasses & contact lenses every year.

So call us to protect & correct your vision, & save money & the planet for our sake & the next generations!

Correct your vision in Birmingham to save the planet & money

there are different vision correction treatments

Vision correction is much more than laser eye surgery. There are actually 8 types of vision correction procedures: LASIK, LASEK, SMILE, vision correction cataract surgery, lens replacement, phakic intraocular lenses, corneal inlayscorneal crosslinking.

Mark Wevill is the only surgeon in Birmingham & the West Midlands who has experience and expertise in all of them & is able to recommend the best vision correction solution for you personally. Your eyes are unique, therefore you need a customised vision correction solution tailored specially to you.

Laser or lens treatment? Why not decide with us or let us make a recommendation about which is best for you? Your own individual, personal treatment plan may include one or more of the following:

"Mark, you are a genius. So patient with me as I turned into "wimp of the year" and with such a calming nature. The surgery is so well worth it - just go for it! Be brave - it's not painful and the benefits are amazing."

Laser Eye Surgery - Wavefront LASIK & LASEK

Why not join the millions of people who are experiencing the benefits of laser eye surgery (LASIK, LASEK & PRK)? Laser treatment is best for you if you are between about 18 & 55 years old (Find out how much you can save on vision corrections costs over your lifetime with laser surgery). At your consultation your eyes will be analysed with advanced eye scanners. The information is used by the latest Schwind excimer & Intralase femtosecond lasers to carry out a personal, customised laser eye surgery treatment of your eyes. All the laser treatments are accurate, wavefront, blade free & take about 10 minutes to change your life.

“My individualized approach to patients ensures tailored treatment to suit your eyes.”   Mark Wevill

The Intralase femtosecond laser creates bubbles with incredibly accurate laser pulses which last less than a billionth of a second (1). The bubbles gently create a thin layer on the surface of your eye which is carefully peeled away (2)

The underlying layer is then precisely reshaped in a wavefront optimised profile by a Schwind Armaris laser using award winning, precision German optics (3).

Then the layer is carefully replaced (4). You’ll see the difference immediately & it gets better quickly.

LASEK (or advanced surface treatment) is also better suited to certain people’s eyes and for some sports and occupations. No flap is created – the surface layer is removed (1) to allow the surface of the cornea to then be reshaped in a wavefront profile by the Schwind laser (2).

If you are over 40 & have presbyopia (difficulty reading and seeing your phone) then you may be suitable for monovision blended laser eye surgery, which improve distance & near (reading) vision. Mark has had monovision blended laser eye surgery as he happens to be over 40! He has been carrying out laser eye treatments since 1996 & will be able to advise you about the best option for your unique eyes.

Phakic Lens or Implantable Contact Lenses (ICL)

Phakic lens implants are like small contact lenses which are placed in your eyes between your own natural lens & your cornea (front window of your eye). Your own lens is not removed & this treatment is usually best if you’re younger than 50. The results are excellent, especially for people who are very short sighted or scared of laser eye surgery.

Types of phakic lenses include the Visian ICL, Artisan or Artiflex lenses. Mark has been implanting phakic lenses since 1998, & will let you know if you are suitable for this procedure.

Lens Replacement Surgery
(Also known as Lens Exchange & Intraocular Lens )

Having to wear reading glasses can make us feel old. But a carefully selected, new intraocular lens (IOL) can replace your ageing natural lens, turning back the years & restoring your vision. Your old lens is removed & replaced by a high tech, new lens. This treatment is usually best for you if you are older than 40.

A quick refractive lens exchange surgery procedure with the latest intraocular lenses has rejuvenated the sight of thousands of Mark Wevill’s patients lives & they can now drive & read without glasses. The procedure is the same as cataract surgery. Find out more about the cost of lens replacement surgery. We may be able to get rid of your frustrations & your glasses. So why not see if you’re suitable by booking a consultation in Birmingham with Mark, who has been correcting people’s vision with intraocular lens implants for over 20 years? He’ll recommend the best lens for you personally.

BLENDED VISION / MONOVISION

Blended vision (also known as monovision) is a creative laser eye surgery treatment for middle aged people with presbyopia who are frustrated by carrying around reading glasses to see a phone, menu or read anything.

When we’re young, the lens inside our eyes is flexible & adjusts to give us near & distant vision. As the lens ages, it can’t flex & we start to need glasses for near vision & later even distant vision. If you’re short sighted you need reading glasses over your contact lenses, varifocal glasses or you take off your glasses to read.  This occurs because the lens inside our eyes is ageing & we can’t stop or reverse the ageing with eyedrops, lasers or surgery.

So how can laser eye surgery which is done on the cornea, not the lens, restore nearby & distance vision? Well,  thousands of our patients are enjoying good near & far vision without glasses after monovision or blended laser eye surgery,  & here is how it works.

Each eye is given a slightly different focal distance like having each foot on a different step. One eye is adjusted so you can see nearby (e.g. a book & putting on make-up) & at an intermediate distance (e.g. car satnav). The other is adjusted for good distance vision (e.g. driving & tv) & intermediate objects. Our brains can accept a small focus difference between our eyes quite easily especially if there is an intermediate focal zone overlap between our eyes, which is why we call this overlapping or “blended vision”.

Therefore the focus of each eye is slightly different & blends over the intermediate focal zone. Just as most of us can balance well with each foot on a separate step, especially if the steps are small, our brains can balance our vision with slightly different focal distances. Most of us get used to balancing the small step between our new distance & near vision easily.

With blended monovision you get a greater depth of vision than with regular laser eye surgery & many people have been able to throw away their annoying reading glasses. Monovision blended vision can be achieved with LASIK or LASEK, or intraocular lenses.

Mark Wevill is very happy with his monovision LASIK which has given him freedom from glasses.
