How to correct your vision
Vision correction is much more than laser eye surgery. There are actually 8 types of vision correction procedures: LASIK, LASEK, SMILE, Refractive Cataract Surgery, Refractive Lens Exchange, Phakic Intraocular Lenses, Corneal Inlays and Corneal Crosslinking.
Mark Wevill is the only surgeon in Birmingham and the West Midlands who has experience and expertise in all of them and is able to recommend the best vision correction solution for you personally. Your eyes are unique, therefore you need a customised vision correction solution tailored specially to you.
But which of these is best for you? Your own individual, personal treatment plan may include one or more of the following:
LASER EYE SURGERY: SMILE, LASIK & LASEK
Why not join the 50 million people who are experiencing the benefits of laser eye surgery (LASIK, LASEK and PRK)? This treatment is best for you if you are aged between about 20 and 50. At your consultation your eyes will be analysed with a wavefront scanner and corneal topography mapping system. The information is used to programme the latest Zeiss Visumax and Mel90 lasers to carry out a personal, customised treatment of your eyes – we’re the only provider in Birmingham to offer this superb laser eye surgery technology. All 3 types of laser treatment are wavefront, accurate, blade free, and take about 10 minutes to change your life.
SMILE: The only Zeiss Visumax femtoseond laser in Birmingham is used to gently create tiny bubbles which separate the tissue on the cornea (or front window) of the eye to gently & precisiely change eye focus. The femtosecond laser pulses last a millionth of a billionth of a second each which is very precise! You recover quickly & it's great for sports & some occupations such police officers.
LASIK: The Zeiss femtosecond laser bubbles precisely create a thin layer on the surface of your eye which is lifted. The underlying layer is then precisely reshaped by excimer lasers, either the Bausch & Lomb or Mel90 Zeiss lasers, which has the precision optics for which Zeiss is renowned.
LASEK (or advanced surface treatment) is also better suited to certain people's eyes and for some sports and occupations. No flap is created – the surface layer is loosened to allow the surface of the cornea to then be reshaped by the B&L or Zeiss laser. Read more about laser eye treatment ...
If you are over 40 and have presbyopia (difficulty reading and seeing your phone) then you may be suitable for the Zeiss Presbyond treatment, which can restore reading vision. Mark has been carrying out laser eye treatments since 1996 and will be able to advise you about the best option for your unique eyes. Unlike other laser providers in Birmingham, we offer all 3 treatments.
INTRA-OCULAR LENS REPLACEMENT SURGERY
Having to wear reading glasses can make us feel old. But a carefully selected, new intraocular lens (IOL) can replace your natural lens, turning back the years and restoring your vision. This treatment is usually best for you if you are older than 40.
Refractive lens exchange surgery (also known as Clarivu ™) with the latest intraocular lenses such as the Mplus
, ATLisa, toric and others - has transformed hundreds of thousands of people's lives so that they can now drive and read without glasses. The procedure is the same as cataract surgery
and has transformed the lives of many people right here in Birmingham and the West Midlands. Mark has been performing lens surgery for over 20 years and he will recommend the best lens for you. Read more ...
PHAKIC LENSES OR IMPLANTABLE CONTACT LENSES (ICL)
Phakic lens implants are like small contact lenses which are placed in your eyes between your own natural lens and your cornea (front window of your eye). Your own lens is left in position. Results achieved with these lenses are excellent, especially for people who are very short sighted. Types of phakic lenses include the Visian ICL, Artisan or Artiflex lenses. Mark has been implanting phakic lenses since 1998, and would be happy to let you know if you are suitable for this procedure. Read more ...
Monovision is a clever optical trick to improve near vision in people who need reading glasses. One eye is adjusted to become slightly short-sighted, to enable you to see your phone, put on makeup, use a screwdriver etc and the other is adjusted for good distance vision. Most people adapt to this quickly and easily and the result can be achieved with Zeiss LASIK, LASEK or intraocular lenses.
All these excellent treatments are on offer to you at Laser Eye Surgery Birmingham.
