A Note from Mark Wevill

I don’t like talking about myself, & this should be about you, my patient. But I know that before choosing your surgeon you’ll want to know a bit about me if you’re trusting me with your precious eyes.

I am an ophthalmologist (eye surgeon) & I provide excellent eyecare to improve my patients’ vision & quality of life. I listen to what you are wanting to achieve & together we’ll decide on a tailored treatment plan to suit you personally using safe, advanced technology. And I will be with you personally at every stage of your vision correction journey, from before your treatment until your last appointment. And I will also educate you to empower you to take control of your eye health.

I believe that a surgeon should have a good head, good hands & a good heart. I don’t like blowing my own trumpet, but I believe I have them all.

A Good Head

Good judgement comes from good training & lots of experience.

In 1991 while working in a remote, rural hospital in South Africa, I saw the joy on blind cataract patients faces when the patches were taken off their eyes & they could see again. And I decided to dedicate my career to correcting vision.

I went on to be awarded qualifications in eye surgery, and lens a& laser vision correction from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, the Royal College of Ophthalmologists & the University of Ulster.

And I have been honoured to become a fellow of the World College of Refractive Surgery & Visual Sciences. I’ve also done over 20 000 lens & laser vision correction treatments to correct focus errors of the eye.

This combination of comprehensive training & lots of experience has given me the good judgement I need to take care of you & produce good results.

Good Hands

I train hard & strive to improve in the sports I compete in, especially racing kayaks. The narrower & more unstable the kayak, the faster it goes. So the sport requires high levels of co-ordination, balance & stamina. And I am continuously working at improving my technique & fitness so I can do better. Similarily I’m constantly working at improving my surgery to do my best I can for my patients.

A Good Heart

I enjoyed helping my first patients in rural South Africa to see again & I still feel privileged to be improving my patients’ vision 20 years on. And I appreciate the many kind words my patients have written in their reviews & stories.

I have continued to support eye clinics in developing countries in Africa for the last 20 years. I am currently supporting Destiny Medical Centre in Uganda, I’m on the International Advisory board of Medical Missions Eswatini, and the surgeon training faculty of the Community Eye Health Institute of the University of Cape town & I’m on the Charity Committee of the European Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS). A little more about me

I’ve featured in TV programs & articles in national & regional newspapers. I’ve been invited to give presentations to my colleagues at over 30 international & national surgeon conferences & written chapters in textbooks about cataract & laser surgery that other surgeons refer to.

And I’ve had laser eye surgery myself & so have my family.

I believe in it and the results are amazing.
