SMILE – The Latest in Vision Correction Technology is Here

Have you been watching the Six Nations Rugby Championship and wishing you could join your heroes on the pitch? If you yearn to take up the sport or dig out your old kit, but feel you can’t because of poor vision, we’ve got some news that’s really going to make you smile.

Our incredible new Zeiss Visumax femtosecond laser is the first in Birmingham to offer the innovative SMILE vision correction procedure. The Visumax is the only laser capable of delivering this technique, which can be a better option for sports people and those with dry eyes or thicker glasses prescriptions.

SMILE stands for Small Incision Lenticule Extraction, a minimally invasive procedure that has corrected myopia and/or astigmatism in more than 1.5million eyes all over the world. So, it’s high time this fantastic new technique came to Birmingham!

The high precision, high speed Visumax laser creates a small lens shaped piece of corneal tissue, called a lenticule, inside the cornea in an average of just 23 seconds. The lenticule is then removed through a small laser guided opening at the front of the eye, reshaping the cornea and correcting your eye’s focus error.

People who require higher glasses prescriptions can be treated with SMILE and the eye is stronger after this treatment than with many other vision correction procedures. Also, there is less dryness afterwards, which is great news for anyone who already suffers with dry eyes.

Our eye surgeon Mark Wevill is delighted to be able to offer this procedure to patients at Laser Eye Surgery Birmingham.

Mark said: “I’ve used all the different femtosecond lasers and the Zeiss Visumax is the best by far. It’s much gentler and more comfortable than others, and my patients are finding that the treatment is painless and less stressful.”
