A NOTE FROM MARK WEVILL
MBChB, FCS (SA), FRCSEd, CertLRS, PgDipCRS
I decided to dedicate my career to restoring sight when I was working in a remote, rural hospital in South Africa in 1991. Blind cataract patients sang and danced when I took the bandages off their eyes and they could see again! Now, many years later the I'm still restoring sight in a remote, rural hospital in Southern Africa and I've had laser eye surgery myself. But more about this later.
I was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1995 and started doing laser eye surgery in 1996. I've now done over 20 000 lens and laser treatments to correct focus errors of the eye with an experienced team of highly trained colleagues. We've worked together for up to 17 years and we constantly update our skills and knowledge. We know how to take care of you and produce excellent results.
I've been awarded the Certification in Laser Refractive Surgery from the Royal College of Ophthalmologists and have further postgraduate qualifications in lens and laser vision correction surgery. I've appeared in BBC and ITV programs and been featured in articles in national and regional newspapers. I've been invited to give presentations to my colleagues at over 30 international and national surgeon conferences and written chapters in textbooks about cataract and laser surgery that other surgeons refer to.
I've supported eye clinics in developing countries in Africa for over 30 years including South Africa, Uganda, Tanzania and Gambia. And I now regularly work with the amazing, capable and committed Good Shepherd Eye Hospital surgeons and nurses in Swaziland, Southern Africa.
Millions of people have benefitted from lens and laser eye surgery vision correction. Tens of thousands of my patients have had their lives transformed. Many colleagues, friends and even my own family have thanked me for treating them and getting rid of their glasses. So when I became frustrated with needing reading glasses I knew there was a better solution. I haven't needed glasses since I had laser eye surgery and the freedom from specs is amazing. It's fantastic experiencing the same happiness as my patients!
There are 8 types of vision correction procedures: LASIK, LASEK, SMILE, Refractive Cataract Surgery, Refractive Lens Exchange, Phakic Intraocular Lenses, Corneal Inlays and Corneal Crosslinking. I am the only surgeon in Birmingham and the West Midlands who has experience and expertise in all of them and can recommend the best of these vision correction solutions for you personally.
